About the Color Picker Tool

A Color Picker is an essential utility for web designers, developers, graphic artists, and anyone working with digital colors. It allows you to select a specific color visually and instantly retrieve its corresponding values in various standard color models. This tool helps ensure color consistency across projects and makes it easy to translate visual color choices into the code needed for websites, applications, and digital designs. You can use the visual picker or directly enter a color value in HEX, RGB, or HSL format.

Understanding Color Models

This color picker provides values in three common web color models:

  • HEX (Hexadecimal): This is the most common color code used in HTML and CSS. It represents colors using a six-digit hexadecimal number (e.g., #10b981), where each pair of digits corresponds to the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue (RGB), respectively. Shorthand (3-digit) codes like #ABC are also sometimes used.
  • RGB (Red, Green, Blue): This model defines colors based on the combination and intensity of red, green, and blue light. Each color component has a value ranging from 0 to 255 (e.g., rgb(16, 185, 129)). It's widely used in digital displays and web development. An optional fourth value, alpha (A), can represent transparency (RGBA).
  • HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness): This model represents colors in a way that is often considered more intuitive for humans.
    • Hue: Represents the color type itself (like red, yellow, green, blue) as an angle on the color wheel (0-360 degrees).
    • Saturation: Represents the intensity or purity of the color (0% is grayscale, 100% is the most vivid color).
    • Lightness: Represents how light or dark the color is (0% is black, 50% is the pure color, 100% is white). Example: hsl(161, 83%, 39%).

Like RGB, HSL also has a variant with an alpha channel for transparency (HSLA).

How to Use This Color Picker

You have two ways to choose a color:

  1. Visual Picker: Click the large color square to open your system's native color selection interface. Choose your desired color.
  2. Manual Input: Type or paste a valid color code directly into the HEX, RGB (e.g., rgb(16, 185, 129)), or HSL (e.g., hsl(161, 83%, 39%)) input fields.

As you select or enter a color, the preview box and all other value fields will update instantly. Click the "Copy" button next to any value to copy it to your clipboard for easy pasting into your code or design software. If you enter an invalid format, the input box border will turn red.
